Digital Lighting Oppurtunity

The multiple 100,000-hour LED’s are each of a single
wavelength (color). The individual junctions are laid
up into facet subassemblies with coincident beams
capable of producing all shades of “white light” and
carrying out the illumination of a set area. This is the
heart of the DLF technology and is controlled by the
DLF Technology Development Company, DLFTD.
These smaller building blocks can then be easily
configured per specific applications.

The general business concept allows anyone from
the consumer to luminaire manufacturer to build a
lighting fixture from the ground up, tailor made to the
final application rather than building a fixture around
a common lamp. The business opportunity can be
approached from one or more marketing
perspectives.  The traditional approach of vertical
integration, would envision the technology,
manufacture, distribution and sale being controlled
by the DLFTD.  An alternate approach empowers the
presently entrenched luminaire manufacturers who
have access to the end customers and understand
the lighting applications.  They will purchase the
control electronics and light-source facets from the
DLFTD and license the use of the technology. They
will then lay up the components into the final
application-specific luminaire and sell to the end user
similar to their present way of doing business.
The DLF technology has access to a world wide
market for lamps (6 billion units USA alone) and
luminaires in excess of 40 billion dollars yearly.  It
would take 350 billion LED junctions just to
provide illumination in the USA which uses 20% of
its electric power (3,841,456 GigaWatt-hours) for
lighting. At $.01 per junction this translates into a
$3.5 billion dollar US market for junctions alone
less the electronics.

proof of principle device is $50,000.  A second
stage working prototype with control electronics
and advanced packaging technology
implementation requires an additional $500,000
dollars. Following stages to reach production
units, will require an estimated additional $1
million investment. At any of the stages a strategic
partnership may be struck with a major player, be
it a major luminaire, lamp manufacturer or retailer.
The goal is to reach 5 billion junctions world wide
within 5 years from the start of production with
estimated total revenues over 80 million dollars.

Digital Lighting describes a disruptive technology utilizing solid-state light
sources of superior luminous efficiency and 100,000 hours lifetime to replace
conventional lamps and fixtures. The Digital Lighting Fixture, DLF, concept
advocates a unique approach to solid-state illuminating devices where multiple
discrete electronically controllable, (hence digital), light emitting junctions are
used to provide illumination in relation to an area and the specific visual tasks
being carried out therein. “Photonic Addressing” is used to provide vectored

In a radical departure from conventional filament and discharge lamps and a
significant departure from the path being taken by the major LED manufacturers
whereby they are packaging LED junctions in evermore powerful high current
configurations to carry out the function of lamps, the DLF patent proposes  using
multiple, small sized, low current, sources of differing characteristics
synergistically such that the effect of the whole is greater than the sum of the
individual parts.  The added controllability offered by breaking the total light
output up into discreet specifically amiable and dimmable elements which can be
addressed by control electronics to effect intensity, spectrum and distribution,
yields a lighting fixture (vs. a lamp) of unparalleled energy savings and zero
maintenance over its 20 year lifetime of performance.
